A good gesture for surprise is to turn the hand slightly up and then close it by
bending all the fingers inwards, starting with the little finger, suddenly opening
them again as one and turning the hand over.

A common gesture for asking questions is to turn the hand towards the person
being questioned with the fingers in any position you choose.

A good gesture for expressing approval, or in narrative or making a distinction,
is to touch the middle of the right edge of the thumbnail with the first finger.

There is also a common everyday gesture to suggest emphasis which consists in
rapidly opening and closing the hand.

The trembling hand really belongs to the stage.

We can also clench our fist and place it on our breast in remorse or anger.

Experts tell us never to raise our hand above eye level or drop it below the
chest. It may be moved to the left as far as the shoulder. Anything else is not
suitable. But when we push our hand out to the left to indicate revulsion, the left
shoulder should come forward while the head moves to the right. The left hand
should never make a gesture on its own. It often accompanies the right if we are
counting off our arguments on our fingers, or turning our palms out to the left in
horror, or thrusting them forward to express objection, or stretching both hands
out sideways, or dropping them to express an apology or to beg, or, finally, raising
them in prayer or extending them to point at something or in an invocation.

Walk and posture need attention. It is ugly to stand with the right foot forward
and to advance the hand and foot at the same time. You may put the weight on
the right foot but the torso must be straight. Again, when you put the weight on
the left foot, it is bad to raise the right, or keep it on tiptoe. It is ugly to keep the
